Listening From The Inside Out

Quest Article from Steve Tallamy – Listening From The Inside Out

We all listen from the outside in, whether it’s in the workplace, socially or for our own pleasure with music or keeping up our favourite TV and radio shows. We all do it, it can be a great source of knowledge if we learn what and who to listen to and forms a large part of the way we communicate with those around us, fundamentally it’s a tool we use without thinking about how we use it … it just happens.

But there is a subtle yet vital difference between simply hearing what is vibrating our ear drums and listening to what those vibrations are telling us internally, in our inner-selves. The common phrase of “in one ear and out of the other,” springs to mind as this is how many of us go about our everyday lives; hearing but not listening. By taking a moment to listen to those vibrations, feeling how they make us feel and reacting to those emotions accordingly is true listening. A lost language thankfully being re-learned by those of us seeking a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us.

Taking a time out to listen to our inner emotions, our internal guidance system of how we truly feel about someone or something, is also a vital language we need to learn how to hear. How often have you felt bad inside about something but still agreed to be a part of it in your outer physical world? Many, many times if you’re honest with yourself I bet. These are the time when you are only partially connected with your inner-self, you are only hearing it instead of listening and connecting fully with who you are and what you want to do and be. You find yourself in a temporary state of duality having broken the ‘oneness’ of your true being.

Nature is where I reconnect with myself, listening, seeing and feeling at one with my surroundings, melting into the elements and hearing, truly hearing and merging my inner-being with my outer world. When I take a walk in the woods or a stroll along a beach I not only see where I am, I listen to it as well, deepening my connection with the environment and heightening my appreciation of all that surrounds us. Feeling the vibrations of the woods, the songs of the birds, the rustling of the leaves and the sighing of the trees swaying to the rhythm of the breeze is what makes being in-tune with nature so empowering. These vibrations are not mystical or secret anyone can feel their sense of well-being if only they decide to take the time to not only hear what is around them from the outside – in and start truly listening with their emotions from the inside – out.
