Walk Away When…

Walk Away When

The words “Walk Away” have been floating through my mind for days, so here you are reading my innermost thoughts. Throughout our lives we walk away from a variety of things, usually because they caused us harm or disappointment in some way. We’ve all been in situations that have ended, or expired. There is an inner knowing the time has come to walk away and pursue another path.

Have you ever walked away from something and felt regret, feeling you make the wrong decision, even though it felt right at the time? Our life is full of decision making 24/7. Sometimes I feel like walking away from making decisions!

Walk Away When:

  1. You are physically or mentally abused by people forcefully putting their needs at the expense of yours.
  2. You are treated with disrespect – this covers a great deal of territory!
  3. You find yourself giving your inner power away – your inner power belongs to you. No one can take it away without your permission.
  4. You know it’s time to change the direction of your life. You feel right about your decision because ‘contrast’ taught you powerful lessons about what you want and do not want in your life.
  5. You can find no other alternative that supports you, except to walk away. For example, harmful addictions and behavior.
  6. You are angry, reactive or overwhelmed. Give yourself time to cool your jets.
  7. Walk away from things that poison your soul.

“And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.        — Marianne Williamson in A Return To Love

Walk Life:

  1. Courageous, never stooping to the level of the abuser. Walk away and contemplate the valuable lessons there for you.
  2. With respect for yourself and others, even though you have may different belief systems and practices.
  3. Feel your inner and outer power. Value your own worth and others will follow suit.
  4. Make conscious choices and decisions that support your life.
  5. Support others and you will find they support you in turn. Ask for help when you need it.
  6. Adopt the practice of balanced well-being. Respond with kindness and generosity of spirit.
  7. Feed your soul the best fuel daily.

I quote from my book, Change Your Movie, Change Your Life: 7 Reel Concepts for Courageous Change: “As the producer of your life, decide to use your role as casting director to find people who are willing to play strong supporting roles in your movie. Many will show up to audition. Not all will make the cut simply because they don’t fit the theme of your movie. Learn to let go, and don’t try to force someone to be something they are not. Some characters will stay as long as both of you find value in each other, and then they will move on when the important role they played in your movie has ended. Learn to appreciate the significance of another’s contribution, no matter how small it may first appear to be. A course correction of one degree is only truly appreciated after many miles. One small comment made in a moment of poignant honesty can dramatically alter the course of one’s life, changing tragedy to triumph.

There will be people dropping out of your movie production from time to time as their part ends. Let them go. Perhaps they played their part and are moving on to a new production. Bless them for their participation with gratitude, knowing the right cast of characters will show up to audition for the parts you need filled, right when you need them.

Surround yourself with supportive people who have a good sense of self-worth. We all benefit from cheerleaders in our life who are positive and motivated themselves. As movie directors, we can all use some behind the scenes support! Build a strong relationship with yourself and with those who support and inspire you. Internal validation builds a level of confidence that is unshakable.”

  1. When I first started reading your post, I thought perhaps I had a regret…. But then when I read your list of 7 reasons to walk, I realized that 4 of the 7 reasons were present so walking was the best thing I could have done. Thank you!

  2. #4 is why I walked away from doing anything else about having an online business. I completely changed direction and delved into creating things people want. ?

No moss grows under your feet Peggy, you moved on and people are loving your creative projects!

  3. How amazing! “Walk Away” came up today when I pulled my cards for today from one of Doreen Virtue’s decks. I’m not sure what it’s talking about in my case (I’m thinking it’s about my work projects), but it has certainly caused me to take a closer look at how and where I’m spending my time and energy. Great post!

  4. Love this article Debra, I completely resonate with your content and message. At times walking away or walking life can be more disruptive than I think it needs to be at times. Still like you said, there is always a lesson to take away from the situation and that is what we have to truly connect with in order to move forward 🙂

Thank you Andy, I know you understand, and yes always a lesson even if it takes us awhile to ponder before the AHA moment hits us! 🙂

  5. Love this Debra! Wise words indeed.
I also practice self love as my #1 priority, that is what gives me the ability, from my core, to follow the other steps you mention.

  6. Loved this thank you!

  7. For many years, I struggled with when to walk away and when to “try harder.” It didn’s seem to matter whether it was a job, a project, a volunteer gig or a relationship.I’m not sure how or when I realized that not everyone or everything is meant to be… or meant for me but, what a relief! Thanks so much for sharing.
